For example, there are eight types of semi-regular tessellations, made with more than one kind of regular polygon but still having the same arrangement of polygons at every corner. Suffice to say, many other types of tessellation are possible under different sets of rules. Escher, 1936.īeing the farthest thing from a mathematician or scientist, from this point on tessellation go way over my head. Fyodorov was the first to engage in a mathematical study of tessellations.Īn Alhambra tessellation as drawn by M.C. About two-hundred years later, in 1891, the Russian scientist, Yevgraf Fyodorov, in studying the arrangement of atoms in the crystalline solids, proved that every periodic tiling features one of seventeen different groups of isometries (reflections, rotations, and translations). He was the first to explore and explain the hexagonal structures of honeycombs and snowflakes. He wrote about regular and semi-regular tessellations in his Harmonices Mundi. In 1619 the German mathematician, Johannes Kepler, made one of the earliest documented study of tessellations. Since that time, they've been an element in virtually every civilization having developed an advanced decorative culture. They go back some five-thousand years to the Sumerian culture (above) of around 3300-3000 BC (located in modern-day Iraq). Tessellations are not the artistic stepchild of modern-day mathematics. Notice the faint vertical and diagonal guidelines used to align the tiles.Ĭone mosaic pattern columns, ca. Each tile may contain non-tessellating decorative elements as well. Tessellations tiles need not have straight edges. If the right contrasting colors are chosen for the tiles of the various shapes, amazing patterns are formed, and these can be used to decorate physical surfaces. Escher, famous for making tessellations with irregular interlocking tiles, shaped like animals and other natural objects (above). Undoubtedly the most famous artist to utilize tessellations was M.C. Mathematics being a rigidly left-brain subject, it would be fair to say this was an example of left-brain art.an art form ruled by rules. I don't recall for sure, but I think these were probably plane geometry students, which is not exactly higher mathematics but neither is it a playground for imbeciles. Students were coming up with incredibly complex designs (similar to the one above), some just short of mind-boggling. I kept my mouth shut and observed (a tactic I'd advise for anyone knowing little or nothing about any subject). Yet students were coming to me for help in making theirs. I'm ashamed to say it now, but at the time, I had never even heard of such things, much less how to create one. They were having students create tessellations. Many, many years ago, when I first became a high school art instructor, I was somewhat startled to find that our high school math department also taught art.

However, the more typical means to achieve their target is to perform tasks for the level's local crime syndicate. Points can be gained from anything, such as causing death and destruction amid the traffic in the city, completing special challenges, or stealing and selling cars for profit. The player is free to do whatever they want, but have limited lives upon doing so. In each level, the player's ultimate objective is to reach a target number of points, which starts at $1,000,000 but becomes higher in the later levels, and then reach the level's "goal" to complete the stage. Players begin a game choosing a character from among eight-four in the PlayStation version-and naming them, though the choice is purely aesthetic, and does not affect the overall gameplay. The progression is linear, as each level completed automatically unlocks the next one in the chain. Grand Theft Auto is made up of six levels split between three main cities each locale is based on a real-life city in the United States, with an alternative name: Liberty City ( New York City), San Andreas ( San Francisco), and Vice City ( Miami). Gameplay Gameplay image, showing the top-down view in Liberty City The first sequel in the series, Grand Theft Auto 2, was released in October 1999. The success of Grand Theft Auto spawned a series of games which built upon the original's gameplay and themes the Grand Theft Auto series has since become one of the most popular and best-selling video game franchises of all time. Two expansions taking place in 1960s England, Grand Theft Auto: London 1969 and Grand Theft Auto: London 1961, were launched in 1999. Over time, it has been recognised as one of the greatest video games. While the graphics and controls were criticised, the entertainment value, sound design and freedom of the gameplay were praised. Grand Theft Auto was met with mixed reviews upon release, but was a commercial success. The game's marketing campaign, organised by publicist Max Clifford, exploited this stirring of controversy as free promotion. Grand Theft Auto created a great deal of controversy even before its launch due to its violent content, with discussions taking place in the British House of Lords about banning its sale. The development team worked to ensure that the player would have the freedom to play however they intend. However, the game was considered dull, and the concept of playing as a criminal was adopted. Grand Theft Auto began development as a game titled Race 'n' Chase, in which the player controlled a police officer pursuing criminals. Said points are gathered by completing various missions throughout each city, although the player can gather the points through other means as well. The gameplay is presented from a top-down perspective and takes place within an open-world environment in which the player is required to gather a certain number of points (ranging in the millions) to progress through the game's chapters. The game's narrative follows a criminal who climbs in status within the criminal underworld across three fictional cities, inspired by real-life locations. It is the first title of the Grand Theft Auto series and was released in November 1997 for MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows, in December 1997 for the PlayStation and in October 1999 for the Game Boy Color. Grand Theft Auto is an action-adventure video game developed by DMA Design and published by BMG Interactive. hES cells are effectively an empty canvas. This developmental plasticity is what allows these embryonic cells to mix at different stages of development while still maintaining their ability to develop normally. An embryo at the pre‐implantation stage, if cut in half, can form two distinct embryos that develop to full term if two embryos at different developmental milestones are fused, the resulting single aggregate embryo again develops normally and contains genetic information from four different parents (Thomson, 2001). The cells of the embryo, although primitive, demonstrate self‐regulatory behavior. hES cells are derived from in vitro‐fertilized embryos, harvested once the ICM sprouts from the inner layer of the blastocyst. James Thomson, considered the father of hES cell research and predictor of future discoveries in the field, describes this class of embryonic cells as distinguished by their “developmental plasticity” and by how they can be derived in the first place. We also consider the future trajectory of their clinical applications. Currently, hES are used in various types of tissue engineering and are undergoing rigorous investigation for their regenerative potential in the treatment of diseases such as Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis (MS), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), cardiovascular ischemic lesions, and diabetes mellitus this list is not exhaustive (Orlic, 2003 Urbanek et al., 2005 Dimos et al., 2008 Wong and Chang, 2009 Martino et al., 2010 Uccelli et al., 2011 Tabansky and Stern, 2016 Dang et al., 2018).Ĭonsidering the growing interest in this field and its promise in disease treatment, regenerative medicine, cell and gene therapy, and in deepening our understanding of human cellular development, detailed discussion of these areas seems appropriate. At one point, before the work of Thomson, Martin, and Evans with mouse, primate, and human ES cells (Thomson et al., 1995 Pera et al., 2000), EC cells were the gold standard stem cell model. The isolation of hES cells led to a more convenient and reliable model for studying human cellular development and differentiation than embryonal carcinoma (EC) cells. After they are removed from the blastocyst, ICM cells destined for culture are named hES cells. On the fifth day of development, the first differentiation is observed wherein the inner cell mass (ICM) emerges cells of the ICM are pluripotent (can differentiate into any type of cell) and once harvested can undergo mitosis indefinitely in culture (Cruz et al., 2012 Yu and Thomson, 2016). Embryonic stem cells are selected at specific developmental milestones, obtained before endometrial implantation of the blastocyst, the interval before they are embedded in the thickened stratum of uterine wall they are called “blastomeres” during the blastocyst stage of embryonic cleavage (Standring, 2016). Their inherent biological traits (i.e., indefinite proliferation, pluripotency, and genotypic normalcy) have enabled us to envisage boundless applications to disease treatment, cell therapy, and regenerative medicine (Nakatsuji and Suemori, 2002 Fritsch and Singer, 2008). The level of interest in this field is seldom seen elsewhere (Evans and Kaufman, 1981 Martin, 1981), but the attention hES cells receive is well deserved. The evolution of biological knowledge, and the use of human embryonic stem (hES) cells following the first report of their derivation from mouse blastocysts in 1981, has given birth to an exciting field, motivating further study of human cell development and differentiation.
